Can anyone recommend good Photoshop alternatives?

Posted by grenadekitten - November 12th, 2023

I opened Photoshop today and was really disappointed to see a notification that they added AI generation in the app. I don't want to deal with the issue of credibility now that it may be questionable whether I actually created a piece of art myself if I used Photoshop to make it, so I'll be looking for an alternative very soon. Please let me know if you can suggest another good drawing/painting program. I'm also extremely furious to find out only now that Adobe has been secretly using my personal files as AI training data, and I had to deliberately opt out of that in my account privacy settings. I already had massive disdain for this scumbag corporation, but now I absolutely despise Adobe and want nothing to do with them.

You can look at this section: https://www.newgrounds.com/wiki/creator-resources/art-resources
Look for those that say free alternative to photoshop.

very helpful, thanks!

That's a shame to hear. AI is getting more and more troublesome. I'm not an expert on all the art softwares out there, but I started using Clip Studio Paint as an alternative about a year ago and I gotta say, it's a great choice if you want something familiar but not just a cheap knockoff.

Paint.NET is my jam. I'd recommend giving it a shot! https://www.getpaint.net/

thanks for the suggestion! I'll look into it

MS Paint:
Pros: Added multi-layer and transparency support

Cons:
Can't save layers in a PSD equivalent
Still doesn't support image rotation and other basic features
Cocreator, ie. AI.

Photopea.com is free

GIMP has worked well for my image manipulation needs!
https://www.gimp.org/

I tried Gimp once and it was a steep learning curve, has it improved much over the years?

Krita

they do have a policy against AI so that might be the one

What exactly are you looking for when you used Photoshop? Image Manipulation, Touching up your work...?

I use it both for sketching and finishing hi-res paintings and 3D renders

krita

I saw on Krita forums that the devs are against AI, so I'm sold already

I'd say Paint Tool Sai 2, it's free, simple, the layouts are easy to read and has every necessary feature to draw properly.

I used Sai a long time ago, guess I might end up returning to it we'll see

Medibang !
I personaly use it !
Try, this is very good
(also fuck ai)

Looks like a good option, I'll have to do more research on it, thanks!

@grenadekitten I'm not sure how much it has improved over the years, as I've only been using it for around a year.
I'll admit that it is kind of hard to learn, but once you have the basics down it's a great tool to have if you ever need to touch up some photos or sprites or whatever.

@grenadekitten You'll do very well from what I've seen from you.

Maybe Serif affiinity is good then. But its not for beginners.
